Ontario Ministry of the Environment draft municipal hazardous or special waste regulation
On June 9 the Ontario Ministry of the Environment issued a draft regulation for the management of Municipal Hazardous or Special Waste under the Waste Diversion Act, 2002. The draft regulation designates the classes of materials for which the Minister of the Environment will ask Waste Diversion Ontario to develop a waste diversion program for hazardous products that are corrosive, flammable and defined as toxic under the Hazardous Products Act (Canada), Canadian Standards Association, and Regulation 347 of the Revised Regulations of Ontario, and that carry the hazardous symbol. Special wastes will include materials that are not considered hazardous but that do require special management such as paint and paint containers, used oil filters, aerosol containers, used batteries and more. FCPC submitted comments to the Ministry on July 10, based on input received from affected members.

Protecting Canada and Canadians
In an effort to maintain a safe and healthy environment for everyone, our federal government is reviewing all substances in commerce today, some of which are used in consumer products, to ensure they comply with the Canadian Environmental Protection Act (CEPA). To assist in this endeavour, we're working with the Canadian government, and encouraging them to take advantage of international research data and learnings. We're also calling for clear communications to ensure the public is well informed about what this process means to them and the products they use.

Industry website on substances used in products
Product safety is important to all Canadians, including Canada's food, beverage and consumer products manufacturers who make products used by Canadians each day. Industry is committed to providing consumers with a range of products which are developed in accordance with Canada's rigorous substance management regulations.

We are also committed to providing consumers with information. Representatives from across various industry sectors have created a website ingredientawareness.ca. It has been created by Canadian industry organizations dedicated to the health and safety of Canadians and the environment.

The Government of Canada's Challenge Program is focused on Canada being an international leader in the safe use of substances in products. It is also focused on making responsible decisions on how these ingredients are used based on sound science. Industry supports these goals.

Products that are currently sold in Canada are subject to rigorous testing. Industry will continue to work with government to ensure that these products continue to meet guidelines governing their safe use. The website ingredientwareness.ca provides insight into the current regulatory framework and industry's role in collaborating with government.
