Sustainability for Canadian food, beverage and consumer products companies
Sustainability performance (environmental stewardship, social responsibility in combination with financial excellence) is an increasingly important driver for business success.  The food and consumer products industry is regarded by major retailers, policy makers, consumers and stakeholders as a key player in improving supply chain sustainability, particularly with respect to environmental issues. Is your company ready to meet sustainability challenges head-on?  What are the primary business risks and opportunities being created by this market/societal shift? What role should FCPC undertake to support the CPG industry in meeting these challenges?

Workshop Highlights

  • Learn about the key drivers, retail trends, risks and opportunities facing the CPG industry in Canada
  • Gain insights into the growing expectations of policy-makers, regulators and sustainability-focused NGOs, consumers and investors
  • Benefit from lessons learned by industry associations
  • Explore ways FCPC can support members in responding to the rapidly evolving demand for more sustainable practices and products

Led by Five Winds International, the workshop will investigate key sustainability needs and priorities of FCPC members and identify cross-cutting sustainability issues currently facing the CPG industry. Information garnered from the workshop will inform development of an FCPC sustainability strategy and action plan designed to meet the diverse and emerging needs of member companies.

Who Should Attend
With its emphasis on the economic and social drivers of environmental aspects of sustainability and its goal to gather and assess member company perspectives on the challenges ahead, the workshop is intended for senior managers responsible for integrating sustainability into core business functions in the areas of:

  • Environment/Sustainability
  • Strategic Planning
  • Supply Chain Management
  • Procurement
  • Facility Management
  • Marketing, Communications and Government Relations
  • Waste Management
  • Design and Engineering
  • Product Development

On the Agenda
The workshop will kick off with a plenary discussion on the key drivers, trends, risks and opportunities associated with environmental sustainability. Thought leaders from government, non-government and industry organizations such as the Ontario Ministry of Environment, Canadian Council of Chief Executives, the Sustainable Packaging Coalition, and a leading retailer have been invited to provide their thoughts on sustainability and the food and consumer products industry.  This will be followed by presentations by Five Winds International on the key trends and developments in the field and the Grocery Manufacturers/Food Products Association (GMA/FPA) on lessons learned from their work on sustainability.

The plenary discussion and presentations set the stage for afternoon facilitated breakout sessions designed to guide members through an assessment of their individual sustainability priorities and needs. Each breakout session will assist members to explore the risks and opportunities they are facing and identify the resources and tools they will need to meet these challenges.  Discussion will focus on the ideal role for FCPC in supporting member companies’ sustainability initiatives in Canada.
